UFC flyweight John Lineker not working with Mike Dolce for UFC 169

UFC Fight Night Weigh-inJohn Lineker was doing great with his new diet, but he is no longer working with Mike Dolce.
The Brazilian flyweight, who has missed weight in three of his five UFC appearances, started working with Dolce after a first-round TKO victory over Phil Harris, but he has changed his plans.
Lineker’s manager Alex Davis explained the decision to leave Dolce before his flyweight bout with Ali Bagautinov at UFC 169 on Feb. 1.
“It got a little impracticable to work with Mike Dolce because of the distance and the communication barrier,” Davis told MMAFighting.com. “He started the diet, but it was tough to continue, so we decided to work with Dr. Marcio Aranha, a great professional from Curitiba. Lineker is lighter than ever going into a fight. He’s doing great. Dr. Aranha identified the problem and fixed it. He’s amazing now.”
The problem, according to Davis, was anxiety.
“(Aranha) changed his diet and worked on his anxiety,” he said. “That’s something I didn’t know. Sometimes, when you get too anxious, it affects your weight cut. When you get closer to the weigh-ins and think you won’t make weight, you start producing cortisol and retain more liquid than you normally would.
“Now, Lineker won’t get there too heavy. He used to weight 147 pounds two weeks before the fight, and he’s at 140 today. We’re going to American Top Team on Wednesday to finish the training camp.”
Lineker has won four in a row in the UFC with three consecutive knockouts, and Davis believes that training at ATT will get him ready for the next level, starting with Bagautinov.
“We have to praise his team in Paranagua in Brazil, but you get to a point where it’s hard to fight guys at Bagautinov’s level, Demetrious Johnson’s, without leaving Paranagua. The major issue in Brazil is lack of training structure. He trained at ATT for his last fight and felt how it’s like to have a team around you, and he will have it again this time.”
Bagautinov enters the bout riding a 10-fight win streak, and Alex Davis expects a title shot for Lineker with a victory.
“If he goes there, makes weight and wins in a good fight, he will fight for the title,” Davis said. “But we should remember that the Russian also wants to win to earn a shot at the title. He’s really tough, we need to respect him. But I believe in John. He will do another great fight, but we need to do everything the right way.”

MEN'S FITNESS MAGAZINE: Mike Dolce & UFC FIT Help You Get a Fighter's Body in 12 Weeks

mens-fitness-jpg

Get a Fighter’s Physique in 12 Weeks
The UFC Fit training program pounds off the pounds.

MF Editors | January 20, 2014

mike-dolce-diet-ufc-fitIf you’re ready to ditch the exercise machines and find a new way to achieve lean, powerful, and functional muscle, UFC Fit is the kind of program built to force those extra pounds to tap-out fast.
Mike Dolce, the designer of UFC Fit, wanted to create a dynamic, exciting training regimen worthy of a championship contender but accessible to anyone willing to take on the challenge. That’s where UFC Fit was born. “I believed it should be more universal, more inclusive of every person, and that’s really how UFC Fit began to manifest: a training program for everybody,” says Dolce.
Dolce is a former fighter himself. He competed on season seven of The Ultimate Fighter and has worked with some of the top mixed martial arts fighters in the UFC and the world including Gray Maynard, Victor Belfort, and Johny Hendricks, who is set to challenge for the UFC welterweight title against Robbie Lawler on March 15.
In fact, Dolce trimmed himself from 280 pounds down to 195 when he was competing. It’s safe to say that he is an expert in training and nutrition.
UFC Fit comes with 12 at-home training DVDs inspired by Dolce’s work with the MMA’s top athletes, and the program aims to help you carve out a incredible fighter’s frame in 12 weeks. UFC Fit comes equipped with three nutrition templates that are flexible to your lifestyle, a 12-week workout tracker, and a lifestyle and nutrition manual. After just 90 days Dolce says, “you’d be in shape to compete for five 5-minute rounds. Conditioning-wise, strength-wise and health-wise, you could do it.” Similar to an actual MMA match, workouts feature up to five exercises for five rounds or 3-4 exercises for eight rounds, weaving in martial arts techniques with calisthenics and dumbbell work.
Dolce harnessed the principles that ignited his dramatic weight-loss and the training philosophy that landed him in Hendricks’ corner to bring you a training and nutrition routine geared not just to get your ripped, but to change your life. The proof is there. Hendricks said he believes in Dolce and his training and nutrition program. He’s seen the results and now, with UFC Fit, you can too!
Want to see how it works? Check back with us in a few weeks, when Men’s Fitness will be putting the UFC Fit 12-week program to the test ourselves!

What I Learned About Weight Loss & The Pills, Powders & Potions

About Those Pills, Powders & Potions…

by Shantanee White

I’ve given it tremendous thought, and after much consideration, have written a blog about all my stupid, desperate, obviously not-well-thought-out attempts to lose weight. These are a few things I did, but have put past me…

Phentermine, Hydroxycut, Slim Quick, Whey Protein…

I’m sure there are others, but my memory for these stands out.

Phentermine

This one was prescribed by my doctor. He also gave my Mum the same pills and she’d lose weight rapidly. I watch her drop nearly 40 lbs. in less than two months. That was the appeal of them…I had to be 19 or 20 when I first took them.
The process…I’d first have to beg my doctor for them, convince him, have my blood pressure tested (Apparently, the pills escalated your blood pressure when you take them, all according to my doctor). Stilll, I’m not deterred from taking these. On the day of my doctor visit, I’m given a B-12 shot, a prescription, and sent on my way. I’m sure everyone is affected differently, but immediately I noticed my heart rate was a tiny bit accelerated. I couldn’t nap on it. Strangely enough, when it was quiet I’d focus on the pulsating in my chest. Still I continued to take them.
The other thing I realized: I’d forget to eat. I was hardly ever hungry. I was going to the gym and losing weight rapidly. There was a week in which I lost 10 lbs. in 6 days. It got to the point where I couldn’t afford them and gained the weight back every time.
I became dependent on these pills, because I was under the impression I couldn’t lose weight without. May as well have been on crack the way I was scratching my wrists…Okay not really, but I loved those things! Ultimately I would stop taking them, as the side effects became too much, and I became dependent on something to make me feel better that has health risks, to control something I was dependent on to make me feel better that resulted in health risks. It was a vicious cycle. In conclusion, Foosball is the devil, Vicki Vallencourt is the devil, Phentermine is definitely the devil. Not sure what it is? Google it.

Hydroxycut

The commercials got to me. It sucked. Stop using it after half a bottle was gone.

Slim Quick

Again, those commercials. “I only shrunk one size, he shrunk SIX!” Yeah those f*****g commercials. They help deal with water weight and whatever nonsense. I blame the cute cartoon. Nothing water couldn’t fix. I didn’t finish these because someone stole them from my bag at beauty school (I could blog about that experience separately for hours)..At this point I’d vowed to stop taking diet pills altogether. I had experienced a month or so in the past, where I’d lost weight naturally. Of course before going back to the pills, powders, and potions.

Whey Protein

The powder portion of this long-winded blog. I absolutely f*****g hate it. I’d buy it, and struggled to drink it. I felt bad that I couldn’t drink it regularly. I knew very little about ways to fully get protein, especially since at the time I gave up all meat with the exception of fish. At this point, I became committed to adapting a healthier lifestyle, and I wound up losing a significant amount of weight, before The Dolce Diet came along.
Throughout this diet pill, powder trial-and-error, even with the weight-loss, I NEVER felt good. I looked better, was working out, but I didn’t feel my best until I adapted the Earth-Grown Nutrients ideology. Not only did I not need those pills or powders, I cleaned up my eating and learned (still learning), to look at what I was putting in my body, their uses, and how to get what I needed daily to feel my absolute best.
There are negative comments, but I’m not being sold any bullshit. It’s just well-packaged common sense, and I truly trust the source. I didn’t need diet pills, just Dolce. I was very young, no serious health problems, all I needed was a strong belief in myself, and some food from the earth….
You can take them, eat less, and still not be performing at your absolute best. You do learn the hard way, but this journey to be the best me I can, has been trying, interesting, fun and absolutely worth it. I write this hoping someone could skip a few steps and go straight to Earth-Grown Nutrients. You’re welcome. 😉

The Back-Up Plan: How to Use Supplements Within A Healthy Lifestyle

supplementby Brandon Guyer
[dropcap style=”dropcap2″ color=”black”]T[/dropcap] he hectic lifestyles that many of us live make it nearly impossible to eat the way we would like to. It would be great to be able to eat a balanced and nutritious “diet” ALL THE TIME, but that just isn’t reality. Life throws us curveballs and we have to be able to make adjustments and do the best we can no matter the situation. That’s where supplementing your “diet” comes into play. First and foremost it’s important to eat clean food throughout the day (and avoid processed foods). But it’s not always easy, some people work long days, others travel, some have dietary restrictions, and some are just plain lazy. Luckily, there are supplements out there that can help with this dilemma. When I’m in a bind for time or simply don’t have the resources around me, I ALWAYS carry these products with me.

Green Superfoods Powder

At times I find it hard to eat the recommended amount of greens, especially when on the road. Not being able to cook or having poor food options close by is not ideal. So what do I do to get the micronutrients I need? Easy, I bring to-go packets of Green Vibrance or EGN Powerfood from Onnit. These help me get vital nutrients from many different greens and fruits that have been freeze dried. It is definitely not the same as eating real food, but it’s the next best option when you can’t. With all of the jam packed nutrients and probiotics in these powders, your body will stay strong until you can get back to that balanced “diet”.

Protein Powder

No, not the chemically made products you find at your local store. I’m talking high quality protein from hemp, veggies, or grass-fed whey. Of course I try my best to get protein from natural food choices (chicken, eggs, fish) but a busy lifestyle and constant traveling can prove challenging. If I’m going to use a protein supplement I make sure it is of the best quality.
Hemp protein powder is great for many reasons. For starters it’s easy to travel with. More importantly, it has good fat, fiber, and protein, plus it contains all 8 essential amino acids. It’s easily digestible so you know your body is absorbing all of the nutrients. My hemp protein powder of choice is Hemp Force by Onnit. The Vanill-Acai flavor is out of this world!
You can find a good source of protein in a to-go packet as well. Hemp Hearts are great to sprinkle in salads, oatmeal, quinoa, etc.
The other protein powders I like are grass-fed whey and veggie protein. These are great for many reasons. They are non-GMO (genetically modified organisms), come from cows that HAVEN’T been treated with hormones or antibiotics, and have no artificial sweeteners or fillers. Just like hemp, it’s easier to digest these protein powders, so you know you’re getting more bang for your buck. You do not have to worry about all the harsh chemicals as you would in MANY commercial products on the market. Companies I would recommend are Vega Sport for veggie protein and All-Pro Science for grass-fed whey or veggie protein as well.

Krill Oil

Anyone taking fish oil supplements should seriously consider switching to krill oil. For many years I took any fish oil supplement I could find, not knowing about the possible toxic metal and mercury concerns in many of them. Honestly, until a year ago I had never even heard of krill oil, now I’m thankful I have. Krill oil comes from shrimp like marine crustaceans, and is said to be 48 times more potent than many fish oils. It also contains more antioxidants, so making the switch was a no brainer for me. The brand I use is Onnit Krill Oil and this is the one supplement I make sure to take every day. The proven benefits include the reduction of inflammation, improved heart health, and lowered cholesterol, just to name a few. If optimal overall health is your goal, do yourself a favor and start supplementing krill oil into your diet.
Not all supplements are made the same. Choose products that are of the highest quality and that are backed up by a trusted brand.
In closing, the best way to live a healthy lifestyle is to get all of your nutrients from earth grown foods that you eat. When/if you can’t, using supplements like the ones I listed above are a healthy alternative.

About the Author

Yeah, I can hit a baseball, and yeah I did hit a home run in my very first major league at bat. May 6th 2011 was the best night of my career. May 7th was a whole different story. The dream of being a big leaguer ended before my ball was even caught in the left field stands… I was sent back to the minor leagues! Six years ago I was drafted by the Chicago Cubs out of the University of Virginia. I’ve been up and down with the Tampa Bay Rays the last three years…I plan on sticking next season. I’ve been through it all injuries, promotions, demotions, playoffs, all star games, etc. The one constant in my life, other than my sportscaster wife, has been a healthy lifestyle. It’s not only helped my performance on the field, but also helped me cope with the emotional stress of a season. Although the life of a pro athlete may seem glamorous, at the end of the day I’m just a guy who can hit a small ball with a wooden stick. Hopefully the people who would read my blog can see that. Most importantly I have been an ONNIT Honor Roll member for the past year and I’m a huge supporter of the Dolce lifestyle!
