Fighter Johny Hendricks trimmer than usual to prepare for Georges St-Pierre

sportdaydfw-j

By MARK FRANCESCUTTI, Staff Writer, SportsDayDFW

Go beard or go home.
Dallas-area fighter Johny Hendricks — with his Texas-sized mound of facial hair — is bearded up for the biggest fight of his life.
He has his Nov. 17 Ultimate Fighting Championship title fight against Georges St-Pierre on his mind so much, he has St-Pierre in his training room every day.
Well, almost.
A cardboard cutout of the welterweight champion St-Pierre hangs on the wall in Hendricks’ Pantego training center. Large arrows point to the belt Hendricks, the No. 1 contender, covets.
It’s a little extra motivation, sure, but if you’re judging by looks, Hendricks looks motivated.
He said Monday he weighs 192.8 pounds for the 170-pound fight. That’s down from 220 pounds in July. He usually doesn’t cut down that far until the week of the fight, when he’ll lose the final 20 mostly through depleting water.
“We said we didn’t want weight to be an issue,” Hendricks said. “I feel great. It’s the lightest I’ve been. I’m getting tired of the diet.”
johny-hendricks-oct29-2013-jHere’s an average day of Hendricks’ Dolce diet:
— Oatmeal in the morning with strawberries and blueberries.
— Then a snack — like apple and nuts.
— Lunch is chicken with quinoa or spinach, and as many peppers and greens as you want.
— Another snack.
— After workouts or before workouts, deer meat with quinoa and spinach and all the greens he can fit.
Said Hendricks: “Two years ago I wouldn’t have said this, but I love steamed broccoli and I love asparagus.”
While he’s eating greens, he also has some oranges in his life — a new orange T-shirt, which reads “Go Beard and Go Home,” to go with his orange Hummer H2.
To give him some relief of the monotonous training, he’s spent time at birthday parties with his three daughters, shooting guns and getting ready to hunt this weekend for deer.
Many fighters have four to five fights a year. Hendricks (15-1) has had just one, while waiting patiently for UFC 167 and St-Pierre.
To keep going, “I’ll try to make (workouts) harder on myself,” Hendricks said. “Sometimes I’ll have music on and try to sing.”
What does he sing to?
“Country. Waylon Jennings. Johnny Cash,” Hendricks said.
And what kind of music does St-Pierre listen to?
“If I had to guess, what is that, techno?” Hendricks said, with a laugh. “French-Canadians want to be French so I say they’re more techno guys. It’s like that Vegas club techno and R&B.”
Hendricks might poke fun at the champion, but he has consistently called St-Pierre, “A good guy.”
He’s is also not bitter at Rick Story, the only fighter to beat him in the UFC cage. Recently, Story reportedly worked out with St-Pierre to help the champ prepare for Hendricks.
“I’m happy Rick Story got a chance to do that,” Hendricks said. “That’s going to better his career. That’s the wrestler in me. I don’t dislike.”

After Third Weight Miss Dolce Diet Could Still Get John Lineker Flyweight Title

BY KHURRAM AZIZ (FEATURED COLUMNIST)
Bleacher Report
UFC flyweight John Lineker could become the latest fighter to call on the services of nutritionist Mike Dolce after he missed weight for the third time competing for the UFC.
However, despite coming in at 128 pounds for his 125-pound match against Phil Harris at UFC Fight Night 30, his first-round TKO win still has him being talked of as a future title contender.
Lineker, a former Jungle Fight bantamweight champion, has always struggled to make the lighter weight class. But, with a series of impressive TKO wins now stretching to four straight, his job has never been under threat at least as far as UFC President Dana White is concerned.
White told the media after Saturday’s event in Manchester that Lineker would be a serious contender already in the thinly stacked flyweight division if he had not failed to make weight three times.
White said the 23-year-old Brazilian’s trainer at American Top Team, Dan Lambert, reached out to him after the event, promising to call in the services of Dolce to make sure the fighter makes weight next time.
According to MMA Junkie:

“[Lambert is] probably one of the best guys in the sport and has been since before we owned this company, and he hit us up tonight and said, ‘Let’s get this kid down to Florida training, get him on the Dolce Diet, and make sure this kid can cut weight,” White said. “[Lineker is] so good, if he had made weight in the three times that he missed, he probably would have a title shot right now. So he’s going to get him sorted out.”

There’s no denying Dolce’s prominence in the world of mixed martial arts. He got his big break in 2005 when he began working with Randy Couture and Dan Henderson at Team Quest and has since become a regular at UFC weigh-in events alongside fighters like Chael Sonnen and Gilbert Melendez. He is also said to be currently working with UFC veteran BJ Penn, who will be fighting at 145 pounds for the first time in his career against Frankie Edgar in 2014.
Of course there is no actual great secret to the “Dolce Diet”. Much of it is tried and tested sports nutrition methods and food most of us are used to. There are plenty of carbs and proteins, as well as fats, to choose from, including the kinds of food you could buy, say, in a deli in Oklahoma or any other part of the US.
In the end, it boils down to controlling calories and making sure the fighter gets enough nutrition during training before the serious weight cut begins in the week of the fight.
However, working with Lineker will certainly be one of Dolce’s biggest challenges considering how ridiculously low a fighter has to go to hit the 125-pound mark. Indeed, last month, Brazilian Leandro Souza died while cutting the final two pounds for his flyweight contest at Shooto Brazil 43.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Dolce said he was willing to take on the challenge of getting Lineker on weight next time.

“I’m a big friend and fan of Dan Lambert, and anything he says, I’m more than happy to help out… If he believes in Lineker, then I believe in the kid, too, and I think we can turn him into a world champion.”

Lineker is certainly a talented fighter in a division that desperately needs fresh challengers for title holder Demetrious Johnson.
Johnson has already gone through the highest-ranked fighters in the division, such as Ian McCall, Joseph Benavidez and John Dodson. The fact that the UFC needs fresh blood for the title chase at flyweight is probably what keeps saving Lineker’s career, despite consistently missing weight.

UFC PRESIDENT DANA WHITE SAYS BJ PENN ALMOST ON WEIGHT NOW VIA THE DOLCE DIET

bj-pennby BJPENN.com Staff Writers
A few weeks ago we announced that BJ Penn will be returning to the cage as the UFC’s latest addition to their featherweight division.
Having contested his last four-bouts at 170 pounds, MMA fans and pundits have been wondering how the former two-division champion will handle the cut down two weight classes.
With ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ season 19 taping underway, the UFC boss has had time to assess BJ’S weight cutting progress and he told the media that Penn, who has enlisted Mike Dolce in advance, is nearly there already!
“First of all, everyone is questioning his weight? He’s almost there now. Wait till you see how skinny he is, it’s crazy. BJ is one of those guys, once he sets his mind to something this is what he’s decided to do. He believes he’s going to rip through these guys and win that title and I love that. That’s what I want guys here for. That’s why when the older guys try and come back, I ask ‘why?’ You’re at this age, you’ve accomplished so many things, look what BJ Penn has accomplished. BJ Penn built the 155 pound division at a time when people used to go, ‘Oh those guys are too small, we don’t want to see the small guys fight. Those guys will never be a pay-per-view draw.’ BJ was one of the biggest PPV draws in the UFC at the time.”

CONGRATULATIONS GILBERT MELENDEZ ON HIS UFC 166 FIGHT-OF-THE-NIGHT VICTORY

Gilbert Melendez weighed in at 156 lbs. via The Dolce Diet and then earned a win over the very tough Diego Sanchez in a lightweight fight that was dubbed an instant classic.

Watch highlights from the fight here:

From Bleacher Report:

Fans, fighters and analysts alike knew a lightweight scrap between Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez had the potential to be something special, and the two scrappy competitors did not disappoint in the slightest.
The two Mexican-American fighters stood in the center of the cage and traded leather for the better part of three rounds, and although “El Nino” got the better of the original Ultimate Fighter, Sanchez refused to quit and manged to drop the ex-Strikeforce champ with an uppercut in the third round.
Wild, bloody brawls are Sanchez’s specialty and Melendez certainly had no intentions of fighting conservatively in this instant classic that most pundits are already deeming 2013’s “Fight of the Year.”

GILBERT MELENDEZ WEIGHS IN AT 156 LBS VIA THE DOLCE DIET

October 18, 2013 – Gilbert Melendez weighed in at 156 lbs. for his UFC 166 fight against Diego Sanchez. Melendez began working with peak performance coach Mike Dolce several weeks before the weigh-ins.
“All is well with my preparation and weight,” Melendez stated in his UFC blog. “I’m not fat, but I do have some extra pounds, so I started working with Mike Dolce on my diet. He’s teamed up with my wife and now that they’ve spoken, she has a lot of new recipes and ideas. It’ll be the first time I do this type of diet, but I think it’s what I need right now. Mike is an expert and this is a new thing I’m learning. I always love when I can be a student of the sport.”
